Student Government Association
Launching Fall 2026
Open to South Jersey Homeschool Association members ages 12+
The all-new Student Government Association (SGA) is a chance for SJHA students to have a real voice in our co-op + community, take on leadership opportunities, build their resumes and college applications, and most importantly make a difference in the experience of fellow students.
This is a student-led group where members will work together to identify ideas, plan projects, solve problems, and create opportunities that make SJHA an even better place to learn and connect.
How SGA Works
The SGA will primarily meet virtually via teams, making it easy for students to participate even when they aren't together in person. When an in-person meeting is needed, the group can meet during the co-op's lunch hour. As of now, the virtual meetings are tentatively scheduled for the first Friday of every month at 1:00PM (October + November will meet on the 2nd Friday due to leader conflicts).
Students who are members of SGA will have their own chat room within the SJHA mobile app for other necessary communications & record keeping.
All SGA members will have equal voting power when deciding which projects and ideas the group will pursue.
There will be two designated leadership positions:
- President: Serves as the student liaison between the SGA and SJHA admin, helping communicate the group's ideas, projects, and concerns. The president is also expected to join in SJHAs monthly board meetings for the first 5-10 to communicate ideas and plans.
- Secretary: Keeps notes and records from SGA meetings and helps keep the group organized.
Other than these specific responsibilities, SGA members have an equal voice and equal vote. If there is a tie, the parent overseeing the SGA will cast the deciding vote.
What will the SGA Do?
The possibilities are wide open! Students will help decide what they want to take on, but projects could include:
- Developing ideas for teacher appreciation
- Welcoming and giving tours to new students
- Helping with SJHA social media
- Organizing a talent show
- Helping organize a science fair
- Growing and strengthening interest-based clubs
- Organizing food drives for the food pantry
- Finding other community service opportunities
- Proposing classes or topics students would like to learn about
- Bringing student concerns and suggestions for improvement to leadership
- Planning spirit days such as Pajama Day, Dress-Up Day, and more
- Creating new events, activities, and traditions that students want to see at SJHA
The goal isn't to hand students a predetermined list of responsibilities. The SGA will be shaped by the students themselves.
How are the President and secretary selected?
One of the most unique parts of our SGA will be how the positions of president and secretary are elected.
All SJHA co-op members ages 12+ will be eligible to vote for, even if they are not members of the SGA team.
Students who want to run for president or secret will create a flyer explaining what they would like to accomplish with the SGA. Flyers will not include the student's name or other identifying information. Co-op members will then vote based solely on the ideas presented—without knowing who created each flyer. The goal is to make the election less about popularity and more about whose vision and ideas students believe would best serve the SGA and our co-op community.
Students who want to run for SGA Secretary will create a flyer explaining how they would contribute to the SGA and what skills they have that will help thme accomplish in the role. Flyers should focus on the ways the student would help keep the SGA organized, informed, and connected.
Whether a student wants to run for president, organize an event, develop a new club, advocate for an idea, or simply have a voice in what happens at SJHA, the Student Government Association is an opportunity to practice real-world leadership and teamwork.
Students will gain experience with communication, collaboration, organization, project planning, problem-solving, public speaking, and leadership which are all valuable skills for high school, college applications, resumes, and beyond.
